New faces

Surrounded by the familiar faces and listening to voices she grew up with, inhaling smells she grew up to love, touches her fingers were used to. Yet, it was kind of funny how she could not recognize even one of them. She could only look at them and think of the times they were the ones who provided her with rope and water when she was trying to climb the mountain of life. She missed the days their laughter and smiles weren't plastered. When they said things they meant, made promises which were to be kept. The thunder was gone but now she missed it. At least there was a promised calm afterward. This was a completely different kind of storm. Sort of like a plague, slowly and steadily eating up humanity. You know it's coming, but until it's here you really don't know what's impending your way. It was hard for her to look at what they'd become, but it was harder to try and remember what they used to be. They say time changes people and use it as an excuse, but they could not be more wrong. The truth is, it only unmasks them. Until now, they were just, covered up.
She blamed herself, for trying to improve while they criticized others. The only mistake she made was believing that people think the way she did. She forgets, that with their nature and behavior, their thoughts changed too. The only thing that kept her going was the fact that if she could fall such madly in love with the wrong people, how much would she love the right ones? She kept believing that one day someone will save her. Save the world. And when she decided to be that someone, everything changed. She decided to truly unmask herself, for better or for worse.
